Samsung patent uses tiny, bright pixels to create seamless folding displays

Samsung patent uses tiny, bright pixels to create seamless folding displays

Creating a seamless display in a foldable device can go a long way towards selling customers on the notion that two screens are better than one: otherwise, you end up with a disjointed effect. Samsung has been trying to solve that problem for years, but a newly-granted US patent could represent one of its more direct answers. The technique would put smaller yet bright pixels right at the joints between two displays, letting Samsung push the screen borders closer together while ramping up the brightness to have those edge pixels blend in with the rest. As Samsung would rely on self-lit display technologies like OLED, it could tune the brightness of those tiny pixels relatively easily, without having to lean on complex backlighting. Given that the patent was originally filed in South Korea back in 2006, there's no indication that Samsung is in a rush to start producing foldable phones and tablets. Having a US patent under its belt right as larger mobile OLED screens become viable, however, could come in handy.

Chechen leader blasts 'end of the world' news as sinful rumors ? RT

Leader of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov. (RIA Novosti / Said Tzarnaev)

Ramzan Kadyrov of Chechnya has told his people that all talk of the possible end of the world on December 21 was sinful for true Muslims as the precise date is only known to the Almighty.

?I cannot understand how people can believe all this. They go and buy candles; they say the lights will go off. Don?t they know that when the end of the world arrives there will be no use for candles? A person who believes in such rumors is considered an apostate by Muslim canons,? Kadyrov told the press. The Chechen leader, who is a devout Muslim, has ordered clerics in the country to talk to their congregations about this problem and make sure that the right understanding is delivered.

According to the official web-site of the Chechen Government, Kadyrov went on to claim that the Muslim holy book, the Quran, contains a detailed description of the end of the world as well as all the inventions of modern scientists, including the launch of man-made satellites. Thus, the head of the republic concluded, the discussions of the issue are a sin and only the Almighty himself knows the date of the end of the world.

This is not the first public display of piety by the Chechen leader. Earlier this year a court in Chechnya outlawed the film Innocence of Muslims even before the Russian Federal authorities had an opportunity to do so.

In early December Russian news agencies reported that Chechen authorities started to build a new mosque in the city of Shali, named after Ramzan Kadyrov. Currently the biggest mosque in the republic is named after Ramzan Kadyrov?s father Akhmat Kadyrov ? a senior Muslim cleric who was Chechen President for a year before he was killed by terrorists in 2004.

New biomaterial gets 'sticky' with stem cells

Dec. 10, 2012 ? Just like the bones that hold up your body, your cells have their own scaffolding that holds them up. This scaffolding, known as the extracellular matrix, or ECM, not only props up cells but also provides attachment sites, or "sticky spots," to which cells can bind, just as bones hold muscles in place.

A new study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom found these sticky spots are distributed randomly throughout the extracellular matrix in the body, an important discovery with implications for researchers trying to figure out how to grow stem cells in the lab in ways that most closely mimic biology. That's because the synthetic materials scientists currently use to mimic ECM in the lab don't have randomly distributed sticky spots, but instead are more uniformly sticky.

The study was published by Adam Engler, a bioengineering professor at UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, and Giuseppe Battaglia, a professor of synthetic biology at the University of Sheffield in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS). The group then mimicked this random stickiness in a foam biomaterial made out of polymers.

Battaglia and Engler explained that the foam uses two polymers, one that is sticky and one that is not, that separate from each other in solution. "It's like what happens when you make balsamic vinaigrette and all the vinegar is randomly distributed in tiny bubbles throughout the oil," said Engler. "We shook these two polymers up sufficiently to form randomly distributed nano-scopic patches of the sticky material amid the non-sticky material."

At the appropriate ratio of sticky and non-sticky polymer, they found that it is possible to tune the size and distribution of the foam's adhesive regions: having less sticky polymer in the foam made its adhesive patches smaller and more dispersed, just as with natural ECM.

What was surprising to the team was when they allowed stem cells to adhere to the foams, they found that random stickiness versus uniform stickiness was required for stem cells to properly adhere. They also found that this is likely necessary for stem cell development into mature tissue cells. As Battaglia explains, "In this sense, stem cells are like Goldilocks: the scaffold should not be too sticky or not sticky, it must be just right to maximize adhesion, and later, to cause stem cells to mature into tissue cells."

The data published by Battaglia, Engler, and lead authors Priyalakshmi Viswanathan from the University of Sheffield and UC San Diego Bioengineering Ph.D. student Somyot Chirasatitsin should help better inform researchers of how to make their biomaterials appropriately sticky for stem cells to 'feel' their way around.

This work was supported by grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (DP02OD006460), Human Frontiers Science Program, and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in the United Kingdom.

US trade deficit grows to $42.2 billion in October

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. trade deficit increased in October because exports fell by a larger margin than imports, a sign that slower global growth could weigh on the U.S. economy.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that the trade deficit grew 4.8 percent in October from September to $42.2 billion.

Exports dropped 3.6 percent to $180.5 billion. Sales of commercial aircraft, autos and farm products all declined.

Imports fell 2.1 percent to $222.8 billion, reflecting fewer shipments of cell phones, autos and machinery.

The trade gap with China also increased to a record high, which will keep pressure on the Obama administration. Manufacturers and U.S. lawmakers have complained about China's use of unfair trade practices.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said the decline in both exports and imports likely reflected some disruptions from Superstorm Sandy. The storm closed ports in the Northeast for the last few days of October. Exports should rebound in November, although Dales expects the longer-run trend to stay negative.

"The bigger issue is that the weak global economy has been taking its toll on exports," Dales said, predicting that trade would drag slightly on overall U.S. growth in 2013.

A wider trade deficit acts as a drag on U.S. growth. It typically means the U.S. is earning less on overseas sales of American-produced goods while spending more on foreign products.

Exports rose to a record high in September, which helped lift economic growth in the July-September quarter to annual rate 2.7 percent. That more than doubled the 1.3 percent annual growth rate in the April-June quarter. Growth during the summer quarter was also helped by stronger rebuilding of business stockpiles than previously estimated.

Most economists say growth is slowing in the current October-December quarter to below 2 percent. One reason for the weaker growth is the decline in exports. And U.S. companies are probably cutting back on restocking, mostly because of worries about looming tax increases and government spending cuts that will kick in next year without a budget deal before January.

There were some hopeful signs in the report.

U.S. exports to the 27-nation European Union rose 1.4 percent in October. Exports to that region have fallen 0.7 percent from January through October because the debt crisis has pushed many European nations into recession.

The U.S. also ran a record $2.6 billion trade surplus in October with the nations of South and Central America. The surplus with Brazil, the largest economy in South America, was $1.8 billion. U.S. exports to that country hit a record $4.1 billion.

Still, the U.S. trade deficit with China kept growing in October to a record $29.5 billion.

American manufacturers say China has kept the yuan undervalued against the U.S. dollar. A lower valued yuan makes Chinese goods cheaper for U.S. consumers and American products more expensive in China.

The Obama administration has lobbied China to move more quickly to allow the yuan to rise in value. But it has refused to cite China as a currency manipulator. That designation would require negotiations between the two nations and could lead to the United States filing a trade case against China before the World Trade Organization.

Movie Review: 'Playing for Keeps' Has No Game - Johns Creek, GA ...

Editor's note: "Playing for Keeps" is playing in Johns Creek at Regal Cinemas Medlock.

Gerard Butler plays a divorced ex-jock who needs to be a father to his kid in the terrible romantic comedy "Playing for Keeps."

Jessica Biel plays his ex-wife who just happens to be getting remarried. Uma Thurman and Cahterine Zeta-Jones play a couple of horny housewives who can't resist Butler. Dennis Quaid has a small role as a creepy team soccer dad who loves throwing money around.?

This may be one of the worst romantic comedies I have ever seen. Butler is a decent actor but this is not his finest hour. He stumbles though the movie as a good-looking, bumbling fool.

The notion that no woman in town, even those who have suffered most from his womanizing, can resist this hunky, dim-witted, loser guy is, well, offensive and even misogynistic.

So much acting talent is wasted on this film, and your time will be too. The Flick-O-Meter gives "Playing for Keeps" a one out of five.

The movie is so bad I didn't want to waste your time either; that's why I've kept this short.

Let me know what you think.?Head to my Facebook page: it's called TheBrettside, and click Like.

How to avoid a financial holiday hangover - Financial Post

Holiday hangover can aptly describe January?s financial woes. First comes the euphoria, then comes the sobering reality that you must pay for your indulgence, and it will hurt.

According to a recent RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook Index survey, Canadians plan to spend an average of $629 on gifts this year. More than half plan to fund their festivities with savings, 24% plan to use credit cards and 23% admit to not having thought about how they?ll pay.

Financial experts warn that emotional spending during the holidays can push you over your financial limits, but a proper plan can prevent the hangover.

?If you?re going to pay by credit card, don?t carry a balance,? advises Perry Quinton, vice-president of the Investor Education Fund. ?Just don?t take that hit in the middle of January because RRSP season is coming up and you?re going to need money to put aside into savings.?

Here are some strategies to help you emerge from the holidays financially merrier:

Make a list and check it twice? List everyone you plan to buy for and re-examine the list with the unforgiving eye of a discerning bouncer. See who you can exclude from the lineup. For example, Interac Association commissioned a survey and found that one of four Canadians plan to buy for their pets and more than one-third will buy gifts for themselves. Something to consider: Do you and your cat, Shadow, really need those matching sweaters?

When did gifts mean love?? Love means love. And chances are, your loved one won?t like the gift anyway. (Almost 80% of Canadians surveyed by RBC have gotten gifts they don?t like.) So give something else: Give the gift of time. Instead of buying presents, go for brunch with your gang or go on an excursion with the family. If you want to give the gift of giving, consider charity: The Western Union Holiday Gifting Index says 87% of Canadian consumers would trade one of their holiday gifts to make someone else happy. So send your father a card with this note: ?In lieu of your regular gift of socks and ties, I have made a donation to [insert charity of choice].?

Earn more cash and save it? Make some sacrifices: Cut out your salted caramel mocha for the month of December or temporarily cut back on premium cable. You could also pick up some extra work. Retailers are expected to hire thousands of seasonal workers over the holidays. For some extra cash, try selling your husband?s storm trooper costume on Kijiji.

Set a budget and stick to it? Easier said than done, I know. Only 27% of Canadians claim to track holiday spending to keep their budgets under control, according to the Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada and one in three Canadians admit they purchase gifts they cannot afford; on average, those who overspent during the holidays went $467 over budget. So how to stay within budget? Go shopping when you?re well-fed and in a good mood because your willpower will be stronger. Also don?t be fooled by the word ?sale.? Do prior research; studies show that items sold on ?sale? can be as much as 57% more expensive than normal. Finally, shop early: 70% of Canadian shoppers reported waiting until the last minute to shop, according to the study for Western Union, and desperation does not fuel good choices.

Look for coupons!? No time for scissors and clippings? Jeff Schwartz, executive director of the Consolidated Credit Counseling Services says there are a myriad of websites out there for your financial benefit including: MrsJanuary.com or RedFlagDeals.com or RetailMeNot.com.

Get creative? If you have a large family, organize a gift exchange to reduce the number of gifts you need to buy. Sites such as Elfster.com help organize and assign names for a round of Secret Santa so there is no gift rigging. Better yet, play the white elephant gift exchange/Yankee Swap and infuriate your in-laws by stealing their Tim Hortons gift card.

Leave the credit card at home? One of the best ways to stick to your budget is use cash. There is a pain associated with forking over your hard-earned money and once it runs out, it should serve as a cue to cease and desist on the shopping. That being said, if you do use your credit card, pay it off on time. Use a credit card debt calculator to determine how long it will take to pay off the holiday balances. (Say you used your credit card to buy your wife hockey skates on sale for $350. With 19% annual interest and $50 monthly installments, you?d pay off the debt in eight months. The skates would then have cost you about $400 or 20% more than the original price.)

Don?t let great distance equal great spending? Fifty-six per cent of Canadian consumers will not be able to see all of their loved ones this holiday season and long-distance gift giving can affect your budget (63% exceeded their holiday budgets last year, according to the Western Union Holiday Gifting Index 2012 Survey). Send your loved ones cash, or shop online and get free shipping directly to their homes.

Enlist a shopping Scrooge, I mean, encouraging helper? Joseph Grenny, co-author of Crucial Conversations, found in his research that 74% of people struggle to discuss holiday spending with their spouse (23% even resort to hiding price tags). Speak to your spouse early about spending limits and hold each other accountable; otherwise, find a friend and make a pact to stick to a budget.

Army-Navy: Honoring tradition, football and otherwise

The annual Army vs. Navy game is one of the nation's oldest football rivalries, dating back to 1890. The football teams from the US Military and US Naval Academies honor all those who came before them.

By Pat Murphy,?Staff / December 7, 2012

In this file photo, Army cadets hold up a sign as Navy midshipmen march off the field before an NCAA college football game between Army and Navy in Philadelphia. No single game is as important to its participants than Army-Navy.

The 113th edition of Army-Navy football takes place Saturday in the City of Brotherly Love, which is appropriate since the young men who will play on the gridiron will ultimately be brothers-in-arms defending the United States.

And like most brothers, the two teams will compete fiercely for 60 minutes (if not more), then salute each other's academy. For those of you who haven't traveled to either West Point or Annapolis, you owe it to yourself to take a regular season game at both locations (these days, the Army-Navy game is not played at either campus).

The US Military Academy in New York state sits on a bluff high above the Hudson River, 50 miles north of New York City. When I visited in the mid-1990s, the foliage around Michie Stadium was a cavalcade of color. The 'Long Gray Line' of cadets marched smartly on the campus parade grounds, prior to the football game. Statues of some of this nation's greatest generals watch over all. And the sounds of the game - everything from Howitzers firing to salute Army touchdowns to traditional marches performed by the Army cadet band - are impressive.

The US Naval Academy in eastern Maryland is located where the Severn River flows into Chesapeake Bay. During another mid-90s excursion, I witnessed one of the closest flyovers anyone might experience. A handful of Navy jets screamed over the top of Navy-Marine Corps Stadium just as the national anthem finished. The names of Navy and Marine battles, fought over the years in far-flung places, were written on the stadium walls.

Another highlight of the afternoon was running into former Baltimore Oriole and Baseball Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson on the sidelines. He, too, appreciated all the traditions of the service academy.

All of that tradition from each academy comes into play when these two schools meet at the end of their respective seasons. This fall, Navy is enjoying the better football campaign, with seven wins and a bowl game later this month. The Midshipmen are led by senior running back Gee Gee Greene, who's accounted for just over 1,000 yards of total offense this season.

Army is 2-and-9, but they own the nation's best rushing attack, averaging almost 370 yards per game. The Black Knights are looking at Saturday's encounter as their bowl game.

The Army-Navy football game will be televised by CBS, beginning at 3 p.m. ET.

(AP) ? British police have contacted Australian authorities about a possible investigation into a radio station's hoax call to a U.K. hospital about the Duchess of Cambridge, they said Sunday, as the company that owns the station promised it is reviewing its broadcast practices.

The prank took a dark twist Friday with the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha, a 46-year-old mother of two, three days after she unwittingly accepted the call about the health of Prince William's pregnant wife, Kate. The death has sparked an angry backlash from those who argue the Australian DJs who carried out the hoax should be held responsible.

The board of Southern Cross Austereo had an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss a harsh letter from the hospital that fell for the call. King Edward VII's Hospital, where the former Kate Middleton was being treated for acute morning sickness this week, condemned the "truly appalling" hoax and called the consequences "tragic beyond words."

Max Moore-Wilton, the chairman of 2DayFM owner Southern Cross Austereo, said in a letter to the hospital's chairman Sunday that the company will cooperate with any investigation.

"It is too early to know the full details leading to this tragic event and we are anxious to review the results of any investigation that may be made available to us or made public," he wrote. "I can assure you we are taking immediate action and reviewing the broadcast and processes involved."

"As we have said in our own statements on the matter, the outcome was unforeseeable and very regrettable," he wrote.

Australian police Sunday confirmed they had been contacted by London police and said they would cooperate.

The radio station callers impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles and received confidential details about the former Kate Middleton's medical information. The call was recorded and broadcast.

Police have not yet determined Saldanha's cause of death, but people from London to Sydney have been making the assumption she died because of stress from the call.

Both DJs involved apologized for the prank before Saldanha's death. Their show has been suspended indefinitely and their Twitter accounts have been taken down after they were bombarded by thousands of abusive comments.

The station has a history of controversy, including airing a segment in which a 14-year-old girl revealed that she had been raped. It also ran a series of "Heartless Hotline" shows in which disadvantage people were offered a prize that could be taken away from them by listeners.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority, which regulates radio broadcasting, says it received complaints from around the world and is considering whether it should launch an investigation

Separately, Prince William on Sunday pulled out of attending the British Military Tournament, billed as "the largest display of military theatre in the world", citing Kate's illness.

Officials from St. James's Palace have said the duchess is not yet 12 weeks pregnant. The child would be the first for her and William.

Citizens celebrate as pot, gay marriage go legal in Washington

Home ? breakingnews ? Citizens celebrate as pot, gay marriage go legal in Washington

December 7, 2012 10:05 am

A voter approved law legalizing same sex marriage also came into force with some 300 licenses being issues to gay couples in the first hours after the law went into effect at midnight.

Washington had been among 20 US states to allow the uses of marijuana for physician-approved medicinal purposes. But the implementation of the initiative passed by voters in the November 6 general election marked a first in the nation. Use of marijuana for any purpose is still prohibited under federal law.

Local police were on the scene of the Seattle smoke-in but just looked on as hundreds of people lit up pungent marijuana pipes and joints at the stroke of midnight. Federal authorities had issued a warning that the pot remained a violation of federal law but there were no federal agents anywhere in sight.

Under the new law recreational smoking is permitted indoors, but remains illegal in public spaces. Seattle police spokesman Jonah Spangenthal wrote on a blog that police would grant users a "generous grace period" during which it would merely issue warnings to those smoking outside.

"Ever since I?ve lived here and I?ve lived here for 21 years, I have never seen so many happy people in Seattle," one participant told ABC News. "Why should we have to hide it, why should we have to be criminal about something that grows out of the ground?" said another.//DPA

New small molecule inhibitor could be a safe and first-line treatment for metastatic breast cancer

ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2012) ? Previous research has shown that a family of genes, proteins and enzymes called the uPA system (for urokinase plasminogen activator) plays an active role in different facets of cancer's biology, including tumor cell invasion, the spread of metastases, and the growth of a primary tumor.

Mesupron? is a new small molecule inhibitor, taken as a pill, that inhibits the uPA system. The results from a recent phase II clinical study suggest that the drug could be a safe and first-line treatment that extends progression-free survival for metastatic breast cancer patients, when combined with the chemotherapeutic drug Capecitabine. Results will be presented by Lori J. Goldstein, MD, Director of the Breast Evaluation Center at Fox Chase Cancer Center, at the 2012 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium on December 7, 2012.

The trial was designed based on the results of a Phase I study completed at Fox Chase, led by Dr. Goldstein, showing both the safety of the combination drug and some evidence of the drug's benefit.

The study included 132 patients with metastatic breast cancer from 20 centers in five countries. In the trial, patients who took Mesupron combined with Capecitabine went without the return of disease for a median 8.3 months after the therapy. Patients who only took Capecitabine had a progression-free survival of 7.5 months.

"The combination of oral agents was convenient for and well tolerated by the patients," says Goldstein. "Plans for future studies are ongoing."

The drug was developed by WILEX, a German pharmaceutical company that focuses on the development of small molecule inhibitors and other new targeted cancer drugs designed to give patients treatment options with fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. In the Phase II study, Goldstein and her collaborators also investigated the safety and efficacy of the drug, as well as the objective response rate -- the patient population who had no sign of disease after a specific amount of time.

Nine percent of the patients who received only Capecitabine had a complete objective response after 24 weeks. The objective response rate among the patients taking the combination therapy was nearly twice that, at 17 percent.

The researchers also looked at different subgroups of participants to try to identify which patients might receive the most benefit from a combination therapy involving Mesupron. Among 109 Caucasian patients, the progression free survival was 7.5 months for patients who received Capecitabine alone, and 9.1 months for those who also received Mesupron.

The drug also showed a significant improvement for patients who had previously received treatment -- before their disease became metastatic.

In the subgroup of patients (n=95) who received adjuvant chemotherapy following the primary diagnosis of breast cancer, progression free survival improved from 4.3 months in the Capecitabine alone group to 8.3 months in the Mesupron combination group.

The drug has shown similar results in pancreatic cancer, extending progression free survival and boosting the objective response rate. "The data confirm the results of the pancreatic cancer trial reported in 2012. This proof of concept study shows the Mesupron may be of benefit in breast cancer as well as pancreatic cancer. Because the uPA system has been implicated in a range of solid tumors, the drug could well find application in a variety of indications," says Paul Bevan, PhD, Head of R&D and Member of the Executive Management Board of WILEX.

In addition to Bevan, Goldstein's collaborators include Nadia Harbeck from the University of Cologne in Germany, another coordinating investigator; and Carola Mala, S. Kastner, and S. Selder from WILEX.

Critic questions way coal firms build slurry ponds

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? Slurry pond failures like the one that swallowed a bulldozer and its driver last week at a West Virginia coal mine could be avoided if the waste pits were built to strict construction standards that regulators ignore, said a mine safety expert and frequent critic of the coal industry.

For at least a decade, state and federal regulators have allowed coal companies to build or expand massive slurry ponds atop loose and wet coal waste, said Jack Spadaro, an engineering consultant and former director of the National Mine Health and Safety Academy.

"They're building on top of the existing slurry, and therein lies the problem," Spadaro said. "It's wet and it has no stability. It's creating hazards for all of us downstream."

In all, there are 596 coal slurry impoundments in 21 states. West Virginia has 114, more than any other state, according to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration. Kentucky has 104, while Illinois is third with 71.

Spadaro's criticisms follow the Nov. 30 failure of a section of embankment at Consol Energy's Robinson Run mine slurry pond near Lumberport in the north-central part of the state. Two workers escaped after pickup trucks slid into the massive pond, but the dozer driver is missing.

"Since we're still in recovery mode and have barely begun the investigation, it would be premature to comment at this time," MSHA spokesman Amy Louviere said.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection also declined comment on Spadaro's charges, but Bill Raney, president of the West Virginia Coal Association, said impoundment failures are rare.

"These are the most scrutinized and most engineered earthen structures in the world, certainly in this country," he said. "They're monitored routinely. They have lots of eyes looking at them. ... Anytime there's a heavy rainfall, the agencies are out there looking at them."

Pennsylvania-based Consol was working to raise the elevation of the impoundment when the accident happened, vice president for safety Tom Barletta said. Once the worker is found, the company will determine what happened "so we can learn from it and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future," Barletta said.

The pond encompasses about 78 acres and is estimated to hold at least 1.6 billion gallons of wastewater, the equivalent of more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Slurry is a byproduct of washing coal to help it burn more cleanly. Companies have disposed of the dirty water, silt and solids in various ways over the years, injecting it into abandoned mines, damming it in huge ponds like the one at Robinson Run and, less commonly, disposing of it with a costly dry filter-press process.

Impoundments typically hold up over time. But they do fail, and in spectacular fashion.

In 1972, an earthen dam in Buffalo Creek in southern West Virginia collapsed after heavy rain, unleashing 130 million gallons of water, sludge and debris that killed 125 people, injured 1,100 and left 4,000 homeless.

Spadaro dedicated his life to preventing that sort of disaster from happening again and helped write the nearly 40-year-old regulations that are now on the books to guide slurry pond construction. The regulations give the government and coal companies detailed design, compaction strength and other criteria so the structures will withstand internal pressures and additional stress from big rain storms.

The regulations require the operator to do daily, quarterly and annual inspections, while the state must make monthly checks. MSHA relies partly on data provided by the companies to spot problems, which critics see as a weakness in the system.

Spadaro is not the only one to question the soundness of impoundments.

Retired miner-turned-activist Joe Stanley raised concerns over the Brushy Fork impoundment in southern West Virginia last year, but his complaints were dismissed by state regulators, and their decision was upheld by the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.

Stanley called Bushy Fork "the biggest and the baddest" of all impoundments and said MSHA inspectors routinely found violations during its construction. But fines weren't levied and construction wasn't stopped.

"They just let them keep going, and then they say, 'Well, there's no way to fix this now, so let's just change the plan.' They're hodge-podging this stuff."

He heavily criticized state regulators and said if it weren't for MSHA, "I think all the damn things would fall down. Immediately."

Just two years ago, MSHA said it had improved oversight of impoundments, with better training and a new handbook on dam management.

The agency made the comments on the 10th anniversary of a disaster in Martin County, Ky., when slurry burst through the bottom of the Martin County Coal Corp.'s 68-acre holding pond, sending black goo through an underground mine and into 100 miles of waterways. The spill in 2000 polluted the water supply of more than a dozen communities and killed aquatic life before reaching the Ohio River.

Massey Energy eventually paid $46 million for the cleanup, along with about $3.5 million in state fines and an undisclosed sum to residents.

Spadaro, who helped investigate that accident, believes MSHA could go further, requiring better engineering evaluations of potential weak spots in impoundments.

He claims regulators at all levels continue to go easy on the industry in favor of coal production. Rather than require companies to build new dams on solid earth or dispose of the wastewater and refuse through a drying system, they allow the operators to raise the height of existing dams and ponds.

Federal law, he said, requires impoundments to be stable during all phases of construction.

"Well, if you build a dam on top of 80 feet of fine coal waste that's wet," Spadaro said, "that is not stable material."

India's sports administration is a mess and the govt finally seems to be waking up to this. Today the sports ministry de-recognised the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) and the Archery Association of India (AAI) for manipulation in their election process. This is just after International Boxing Association (AIBA) provisionally suspended IABF for manipulation of its election. http://toi.in/f2J_-Y

How Does She Do It? - Urban Infant

We want to hear how you do it, Moms! ?Are you a mom in Edmonton, a career mom, a stay-at-home mom, an entrepreneur mom, something somewhere in between? ?Contact us (kjristen@urbaninfant.ca) to be profiled!

Tell us about you, your children and where you live

We are sister-in-law?s, Tanya and Deanne Ferguson, who run Stay in your Jammies Consignment. We live 5 minutes from each other in Edmonton and have 4 kids ages 4, 3, and two 1 year olds 10 days apart.

Do you have help? (incl childcare, housework, personal assistant)

We wish!

T: I have a husband who is super helpful around the house. He relaxes by cleaning the kitchen and washing the floor.

D: My husband just throws everything out or sells it on kijiji.

Best hobby?

T: Rearranging furniture and scrapbooking

D: Shopping

Extracurricular activities for you?

T: I scrapbook once a month to get some me time and I love to do home renovation projects. My husband does not so I wait until he leaves for work to start a new project.

D: Going to Costco by myself. When the kids get older I plan on finding some me time.

Extracurricular activities for your babe/children?

T: Library programs, crazy crafty projects at home, and meeting other moms for tea. We love going to places like Java Mama in St. Albert to play.

D: Swimming, soccer in the spring, any program that?s free. We have annual passes to many of the attractions in Edmonton. We love going to the Museum, Telus World of Science, and John Janzen Nature Center for the afternoon.

What does a typical family day look like to you (Saturday/Sunday)?

T: Matt let?s me sleep in! We take the dog for a walk in the morning then try to find a new family adventure in the afternoon. We love going to festivals in the summer, Telus World of Science or WEM when it gets cooler. We usually go out for dinner one of the nights to give me a break and then chill with a good movie after the kids are in bed.

D: The weekends for us are always full of family time. We love taking the kids to their Grandparents for family dinners (which means I get a break from cooking!) and my husband can sneak in a guilt free nap. My four year old loves playing outside in the country. He can be loud and climb trees all afternoon.

Who cooks dinner?

T: Me! Matt does all the baking though.

D: Me. I don?t think my husband has ever cooked dinner in the 5 years we have been married.

How does the grocery shopping get done, by whom, with the kids, and do you use coupons?

T: Me. The kids know they get free cookies so it?s our outing one-day during the week. I love to use coupons but usually leave them in the car, so they are useless to me.

D:? I do. I try to do it after the kids go to bed. I love grocery shopping by myself. I can go up and down every aisle, price match, read labels and eat samples. I am signed up for some coupon websites and especially like the new Safeway coupons that get put right on my card. Then I don?t forget them at home.

How often do you buy something for yourself?

T: Not too often. I like to sneak small inexpensive items (kitchen gadgets, a new shirt, etc) into my Superstore/Costco grocery shopping trips.

D: I try to save up for bigger purchases so not that often.

Do you exercise and if so, how/when do you fit the time in to do that?

T: I?m training for a triathlon. I don?t know when I am going to do it but I will at some point before I?m 50. I leave as soon as my husband walks in the door from work. I like to go for a run or go swimming.

D: Nope! Tried a DVD once. It didn?t work out.

Favourite movie?

T: I can watch early 90?s teen movies over and over like She?s All That

D: Dirty Dancing.

Favourite nookie song?

T: Nookie? I have one kid that sleeps in bed with us and the other still wakes up 5 times a night.

D: Only my husband knows that ?:)

Favourite beverage special coffee, cocktail?

T: Tea, every day with honey

D: Anything with caffeine in it.

Favourite pair of shoes?

T: My new Bogs for the winter grossness and my Toms, whenever there is no snow.

D: I?m a shoe person? they are all my favourites! It would be like choosing a favourite child. I just can?t do it.

?Cannot leave home without it? item?

T: My car keys?

D: Coffee and snacks for the kids

?

Thank you for sharing with all of us, ladies! ?Thanks for being an Urban Infant reader!

Tentacled snakes born at National Zoo

Eight tentacled snakes were recently born in captivity (Wikicommons)Indiana Jones and Samuel L. Jackson may need to start their own group therapy session: Eight tentacled snakes were recently hatched at the Smithsonian's National Zoo.

These babies belong to an aquatic species of snake native to Southeast Asia, formally known as Erpeton tentaculatus, according to the Mother Nature Network.

Scientists say it is the only known species of snakes to have tentacles, which are used to sense vibrations from fish swimming by. The snakes are relatively small, usually growing to lengths of about 20 to 35 inches.

The tentacled snake spends almost all of its life hiding in murky waters, and scientists say its venomous fangs are not a threat to humans.

Beyond its unusual sensory devices, the tentacled snake has some other impressive evolutionary traits?as well, including the ability to predict where a startled fish will maneuver, allowing the tentacled snake to literally guide the prey into its open mouth. A 2009 report from Science Blogs explains in detail how tentacled snakes use their sharp senses and incredible speed to trap their prey.

"I haven't been able to find reports of any other predators that exhibit a similar ability to influence and predict the future behavior of their prey," Vanderbilt University professor of biological sciences Kenneth Catania said in a statement.

You can watch video of the tentacled snake capturing a fish here.

And in unsettling development for those suffering from ophiophobia, or the fear of snakes, the tentacled snakes also reportedly grow very quickly.

"Within a few hours of being born, the snakes were already acting like adults," Matt Evans, a keeper at the Smithsonian's Reptile Discovery Center, said in a statement. "Instincts took over, and they were hunting. We don't know much about this cryptic species, but we're already learning so much just watching them grow."

For those living in or visiting the Washington, D.C., metro area, four of the baby snakes are currently on display at the National Zoo's Reptile Discovery Center.
