Syria truce dissolves as forces bombard major cities

BEIRUT ?Forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad renewed their bombardment of major cities on Saturday and rebels launched several attacks, further undermining a truce meant to mark the Muslim Eid al-Adha religious holiday.?

The violence, reported by residents, opposition supporters and Syria's government, came on the second day of the ceasefire called by international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who had hoped to use it to build momentum to end the 19-month-old conflict in which an estimated 32,000 people have been killed.

Syrian state news SANA reported dozens of "ceasefire violations" by rebel groups including a car bomb in front of a Christian church in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor.

Activists in Deir al-Zor and in Aleppo, which is Syria's most populous city and about half controlled by rebels, said mortar bombs were being fired into residential areas.

Residents in Damascus posted internet footage of fighter jets they said bombed the suburbs of Erbin and Harasta. Eight people were killed, according to the residents and to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based opposition organization with a network of sources within Syria.

It was not possible to verify events due to Syria's restrictions on media access.

The army has said it agreed to the ceasefire but that it has a duty to respond to rebel attacks.

A commander from the rebel Free Syrian Army said his force would honor the truce but demanded Assad meet opposition demands for the release of thousands of detainees. Some Islamist militants, including the Nusra Front, said they would keep on fighting.

More than 150 people were killed on Friday, including 43 soldiers, said the Observatory for Human Rights. Most were shot by sniper fire or in combat, the Observatory said.

Sectarian worries
The conflict pits Assad, whose minority Alawite sect is distantly related to Shiite Islam, against mainly Sunni Muslim rebels. Recent attacks, such as Saturday's bomb by a Syriac church, point to an increasingly sectarian conflict.

The Observatory released a statement on Saturday condemning a clash on Friday in the Aleppo district of Ashrafieh between rebels and an armed wing of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, which left 30 dead.

"(The fight) threatens dire consequences. It will work in the interests of the regime, which is working hard to incite national sedition and sectarianism," said Observatory head Rami Abdelrahman.

Syrian state TV said two people were killed in Ashrafieh, after "terrorists" opened fire on a demonstration calling for them to leave the area.

Syrian Kurds have long faced discrimination, a lack of full citizenship rights and forced displacements. But Assad sought to dissuade them from joining the uprising against him that erupted elsewhere in March 2011 by promising citizenship.

About 10 percent of the population, Kurds have been able to exploit an uneasy vacuum left by Assad's retreating forces to set up their own militia, some with ties to the government.

Rebels in Azaz, a northern Syrian town, reported on their Facebook page that they have detained Lebanese journalist Fidaa Itani. They said Itani, who works for LBCI television, was put under house arrest as his work was "incompatible with the course of the Syrian revolution."

Truce breaches
A Reuters cameraman in the Turkish border village of Besaslan in southern Hatay province said he could hear a helicopter circling on the Syrian side of the border, as well as gunfire and explosions.

Turkish ambulances were ferrying wounded people from an unofficial border crossing for treatment in Turkey.

Brahimi's ceasefire appeal won widespread international support, including from Russia, China and Iran, Assad's main foreign allies.

The peace envoy's predecessor, former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, declared a ceasefire in Syria on April 12, but it soon fell apart, along with the rest of his six-point peace plan.

Divided international powers have been unable to stop the violence, with the West condemning Assad but blaming Russia, Iran and China for supporting Damascus.

Russia's deputy foreign minister Gennady Gatilov tweeted on Saturday that "Westerners" in the United Nations Security Council had prevented the body from condemning a bomb attack in Damascus on Friday, which the Syrian government blames on rebels it labels as "terrorists."

Malaria transmission peaks at much cooler temperatures than previously predicted

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? The most deadly type of malaria in humans and the one most prevalent in Africa is one that is very sensitive to climate. Previously published scientific studies put the optimal temperature for malaria transmission from mosquitos to humans at 31 degrees C (88 degrees F), but according to a new mathematical model, the temperature for peak transmission of the parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, is much, much lower.

"Clarifying the response of malaria transmission to temperature helps us anticipate how climate change might affect disease risk," says U.S. Geological Survey parasite ecologist and senior author Kevin Lafferty.

"This study has discovered important new temperature thresholds that govern the relationship between humans and insect-borne parasites in the environment," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "With hundreds of millions of cases of malaria reported in the tropics and subtropics each year, each new scientific finding brings us closer to more effectively combating this deadly disease."

The new research shows that malaria transmission is predicted to peak at 25 degrees C (77 degrees F), and dramatically decrease above 28 degrees C (82 degrees F). The model, based on mosquito thermal physiology, incorporated published data from laboratory experiments on mosquitoes. Unlike previous models, the new model fits observations of malaria transmission in Africa very well.

Erin Mordecai, Lafferty's doctoral student at University of California, Santa Barbara, was the lead author of USGS -led study, published in the journal Ecology Letters. Coauthors include other scientists from UCSB, Pennsylvania State University, University of Chicago, University of California, Los Angeles, and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

"We are really excited about the new findings, because they tell us temperatures as low as 82 degrees F may begin to slow malaria transmission," says Mordecai. "This study challenges the common assumption that hot temperatures simply speed up transmission."

Malaria parasites are transmitted to humans via certain mosquito species. The new mathematical model accounts for the fact that both mosquitoes and parasites suffer under high temperatures. Previously published models typically assumed that mosquito and malaria vitality continue to increase linearly with temperature.

To build their model, Mordecai and the research team reviewed laboratory studies that tracked the vitality and activity of malaria parasites and mosquitoes from low to high temperatures.

Lafferty, who holds joint appointments with UCSB and the USGS Western Ecological Research Center, hopes the findings will encourage more detailed studies on how malaria parasites and their mosquito vectors behave in the field.

"Predictive models are only as good as the data used to build them, and even ours has limitations," says coauthor Krijn Paaijmans of Penn State. "Oddly, there is little data on the response of mosquito species to temperature. Better laboratory studies and field ecology research will inform community health projects, and help them anticipate geographic shifts and seasonal shifts in malaria transmission risk."

Sadie Ryan of SUNY-ESF added, "Looking to the future, we are now using our model to build maps of the current and potential future spatial distribution of optimal conditions for malaria transmission."

The research was conducted as part of the Malaria and Climate Change Working Group supported by the Luce Environmental Science to Solutions Fellowship and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. NCEAS is supported by the National Science Foundation, UCSB and the State of California. Additional support came from NSF, USGS and the UCSB Michael J. Connell Trust.

SPORTS: No dampening Fever spirit: Indy faithful gather to celebrate team's WNBA title?

INDIANAPOLIS ? The moon-shaped float members of the WNBA champion Indiana Fever were to board 90 minutes earlier found itself parked near the west entrance of Bankers Life Fieldhouse early Tuesday afternoon.

Spectators crowded in front of the float and jostled for position along Pennsylvania Avenue, many holding cellphone cameras aloft in an effort to forever freeze this wonderful moment in time.

With Douglas, 33, the Fever?s lone Indianapolis native, holding the championship trophy, players exchanged friendly dialogue with fans assembled below. A male voice from the throng yelled, ?Congratulations, Fever,? which drew an immediate and heartfelt ?Thank-you? from a beaming Sutton-Brown.

What was scheduled to be a victory parade from Monument Circle to the fieldhouse never materialized because of late-morning showers. Instead, the Fever moved the party indoors with about 3,000 fans becoming one ear-splitting mass inside the building?s pavilion.

Love Of Family & Home: Rustic Fall Centerpiece Tutorial

?Hey Friends!

Did you all have good weekend?!

I wanted to share another Fall Centerpiece Idea with you today. This one is super easy to make & also inexpensive in terms of materials. If may also look a bit familiar to you....

If you've been around these parts for a while, you probably remember the Rustic/Chic Fall Wedding that my mom & I decorated for last year. This centerpiece was one we did for the wedding, and was one of my favorite parts of the decor for that event.

I see this centerpiece getting pinned on Pinterest over & over again, but realized that I never did a tutorial to show you all how to make it! My bad!?So, I thought I would take that opportunity to recreate one for my OWN home & go through the steps to show you all how you can make one too! :)

Here we go....

I started with 3 glass jars. A tall cylinder type jar from the dollar tree, a regular sized mason jar, & a smaller jelly jar. You don't have to use these exact containers, but instead just look for something similar. You could easily find similar jars in a thrift store.?

The rest of my supplies.....

White Burlap

Jute/Twine

Book Pages

Monogram Stencil

Craft Paint

Stencil Brush

Hot Glue Gun (not pictured)

Brown Paper Bag (not pictured)

I'm gonna go through & show you how I decorated each individual jar starting with the regular sized mason jar. First, cut a piece of burlap wide enough to cover the width of the jar & long enough to wrap around it. Then, cut two pieces of jute to that same length to use as trim.

Set aside the jute & grab your mongram stencil. ?Place it in the middle of the burlap & stencil the monogram to the burlap using the craft paint & stencil brush. If you don't have a stencil brush available, you could easily use a craft size paint brush.?

It should look something like this.....

Give the monogram a couple minutes to dry & then add your jute trim using your hot glue gun. Once the trim pieces are attached, wrap the burlap monogram around the mason jar & secure with hot glue.

Now we move onto the tall cylinder jar. You'll cut another piece of burlap, this piece should be quite a bit narrower....

Wrap around the jar & hot glue.

Then cut two pieces of twine long enough to wrap around the jar and hot glue them around the cylinder as shown....

Now, we are gonna make roses out of book pages to adorn the cylinder. First cut a circle out of the book page. Then cut the circle in a spiral pattern as shown here.?

Starting at the outside edge of the circle, begin rolling the paper towards the center.

Continue rolling until you are to the small circle at the end of the spiral. Add a little hot glue to the circle & attach the rolled paper to it. The rolled paper should loosen a bit when you let go of it.

You should be left with something like this....

You'll want to make three of these total. One will go on the cylinder & the other two will go on the table surrounding the centerpiece.

Hot glue the paper rose to the glass jar & if you'd like, add a little twig for some extra cuteness! :)

The last jar to decorate is the little jelly jar! Cut one one more piece of burlap. Again, cut it wide enough to cover the jar & long enough to wrap around it.?

Grab some brown paper (you can use a brown paper bag) & cut out a leaf. I used a leaf cookie cutter that I had on hand, but you could just grab a small leaf out of your yard & use it for your pattern!

Just to make it look a little more real & give it some dimension, I rolled the paper leaf up in my hand to wrinkle it. I also folded some creases in it.?

Wrap the burlap around the jelly jar & secure with hot glue. Also hot glue your paper leaf to the jar. Then cut a piece of jute to wrap around the jar & tie a little knot to secure it.

On the jelly jar & the glass cylinder, I pulled on the edges of the burlap to cause them to fray a little bit. You don't have to do this to yours if you don't want to, but I like the way the frayed burlap looks. :)

Then add your candles to the the jars & put your centerpiece together....

I had this piece of log?! Wood?! I don't know what to call it! It was leftover from another project, so I thought I would use it! I bought it at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon. I think it makes a great addition to the centerpiece! You wouldn't have to use it though. When we decorated for the wedding, the centerpiece just went straight on the table & it looked great like that as well! The little pumpkin was one that I already had.?

I also gathered some acorns from my mom's yard to adorn the bottom of the centerpiece. Even though they are little, I think they add a lot! It's a little touch of wilderness & you can't beat the fact that they are FREE! :)

The extra paper roses just get nestled into the acorns....

I just love this centerpiece! It's rustic, but I think the paper roses add that little bit of chic-ness!?

I think it looks pretty cute sitting on our outdoor table as well! :)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Looks like Barry Manilow is making it again ? on Broadway.

The Grammy Award-winning singer of such songs as "Mandy," ''I Write the Songs" and "Looks Like We Made It," will start a 17-show stand on Jan. 18 at the St. James Theatre.

Manilow, who grew up in New York, has graced a Broadway stage before, in the winter of 1976 and the spring of 1989. His new show, called "Manilow on Broadway," has tickets ranging in price from $50 to $350.

The 69-year-old crooner, whose most famous song may be "Copacabana (At the Copa)," had 25 consecutive Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1975 and 1983.
