Report: Suspect in Ohio shooting from violent family

In rare situations, students who are isolated from their peers, and lose interest in activities they used to like doing, can sometimes become violent. NBC's Chris Jansing reports.

The teen who authorities believe was behind a shooting Monday in Chardon, Ohio, that killed two students and wounded three others had violence in his life from early on, Cleveland's Plain Dealer newspaper reported.

Court records showed that the suspect's father, Thomas Lane Jr., had been arrested several times for abusing women he had children with, including the teen's mother, the newspaper reported. The father had been warned to stay away from the teen's mother at least once, records reportedly showed.

Police have not formally identified the suspected gunman, but students, parents of students and local media said his name was T.J. Lane.

It was not clear whether T.J. Lane and his father had any contact, the newspaper reported.

The suspect's family said through attorney Bob Farinacci that they were struggling to comprehend what had happened a day after the worst U.S. high school shooting in nearly a year.

"This is something that could never have been predicted. T.J.'s family has asked for some privacy while they try to understand how such a tragedy could have occurred and while they mourn this terrible loss for their community," the statement read.

Students at the high school outside of Cleveland were told to stay home Tuesday.

Officials believe T.J. Lane opened fire inside a high school cafeteriaat the start of the classes on Monday, killing 16-year-old Daniel Parmertor and 17-year-old Russell King Jr. and wounding?three others, police said.

"He had no emotion on his face, he was just shooting," a Chardon student told WKYC.

Travis Carver, another student present in the cafeteria at the time said the expression on T.J. Lane's face was "straight determination."

Second teen confirmed dead in Ohio school shooting

Terrified students turned to social media to console one another and find out more information. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

The suspect was taken into custody near his car a half-mile from the suburban Cleveland school after football coach Frank Hall chased him from the building, according to FBI officials.

The motive for the shooting, which took place while students were studying and eating breakfast, remains a mystery. Fellow students told local media the suspect was a quiet loner who may have been bullied.

Some witnesses told local media he appeared to deliberately target a table where a student who had started dating his former girlfriend was seated with friends, but Reuters could not immediately confirm that.

T.J. Lane was not a student at Chardon High School. He attended the nearby alternative school Lake Academy in Willoughby, which serves at-risk students. Students may have been referred to the school because of academic or behavioral problems.

'Good kid'
When asked about the suspect, his family's?lawyer called him a "good kid."

"By all accounts T.J. is a fairly quiet and good kid. His grades are pretty impressive," Farinacci said. "He's a sophomore. He's been doubling up on his classes with the intent of graduating this May. He pretty much sticks to himself but does have some friends and has never been in trouble over anything that we know about."

Some fellow students called the 17-year-old quiet and sweet, although others said he had a temper, the Plain Dealer reported.

"He would never really talk about his family," Haley Kovacik, who knew T.J. Lane, said. "But you can always tell he had a very sad look in his eyes all the time. He usually just kept to himself."

Kovacik said she never saw him get bullied, but said it could have happened, as he was "very quiet."

"He never really stood up for himself very much," she said.

His now-deleted Facebook page showed one picture of him bare-chested and glaring at the camera and another behind a huge teddy bear that bore a heart and the words "Be Mine," according to the newspaper.

Ian Sanborn and Travis Carver, who were both in the Chardon High School cafeteria when a teen gunman opened fire, talk to TODAY's Ann Curry about the harrowing experience.

He listed "primitive hunting" among his interests, the newspaper reported.

The suspect's family said they were struggling to comprehend what had happened.

"The family wanted me to convey to the citizens of Geauga County and Northeastern Ohio that the family is devastated by this most recent event," Farinacci said in the statement.

"They want to give their most heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family of the young man who passed and their continuing prayers are with all those who were injured."

The mother of a student in Chardon, who asked not to be identified, said her son knew the accused gunman.

"My son's reaction was 'this doesn't surprise me.' T.J. (Lane) was a nice sweet kid who was misunderstood and he probably cracked from being different," she said.

It is expected that T.J. Lane will be arraigned in juvenile court Tuesday afternoon.

Soaring gasoline prices have become a rite of summer in the 21st century.

With predictions of an imminent return to $4 a gallon gas in much of the nation, will consumers in the market for a new vehicle again take a look at hybrids and all-electric plug-ins?

Manufacturers sure hope so. In fact, nearly a dozen automakers are banking on it.

Analysts predict pump prices for gasoline could jump by as much as 60 cents per gallon by Memorial Day, pushing premium to more than $5 per gallon, just as U.S. automakers are enjoying a surge in sales of new passenger cars, trucks and crossover SUVs.

?It?s going to be a chaotic spring, with huge (gas) price increases in some places,? Tom Kloza, of the Oil Pricing Information Service, told Hybrid Cars.com.

Gas at $4 a gallon historically has been a trigger for Americans to begin changing their buying and driving habits. The last few years, sales of fuel-efficient vehicles have taken off with the higher fuel prices, with cars like the Toyota Prius and other hybrids coveted as sales of big pickups, large SUVs and vans sagged.

Past is prologue.

I remember the envious looks I got from stressed-out SUV owners as I filled my wife?s fuel-sipping Toyota with regular unleaded during gasoline price spikes in the 2000s, and that Corolla got less than 30 mpg in combined city-highway driving.

Some modern hybrids and all-electrics get nearly double that.

Yet U.S. consumers bought just 19,874 plug-in electrics in 2011, the industry research firm LMC Automotive said. As pump prices came down demand for hybrids quickly faded as consumers couldn?t justify the initial upfront extra cost for the space-age technology and electronics.

Experts said you?d have to keep a hybrid at least six years to begin realizing fuel cost savings significant enough to justify the hybrid?s higher sticker price compared to a comparable internal combustion engine version of a similar vehicle.

A 2013 Ford Fusion Energi will carry a premium thousands higher than a regular gasoline-powered Fusion when the electric sedan goes on sale late this year.

Despite predictions only 70,000 to 100,000 electrics will be sold in 2012, more automakers hope to be ready in time to grab a share of the potentially larger market. LMC projects sales of plug-ins will grow to nearly 170,000 vehicles in 2013 and to 250,000 by 2015, accounting for 1.5 percent of total U.S. vehicle sales of 16.5 million.

Plug-in electrics are coming this year from Ohio?s AMP Electric Vehicles ? which plans to convert Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mercedes M-Class SUVs by replacing their gas engines and transmissions with electric motors and batteries ? Audi and BMW, which plans to lease an all-electric version of its 1 Series coupe.

Cadillac is patterning its ELR hybrid on the Chevy Volt which debuted last year, Fiat plans limited production of a Fiat 500 EV, and Ford, which begins selling the Focus Electric next month in California, New York and New Jersey, will offer the plug-in hybrid Ford C-Max this fall. The C-Max has a small 2-liter gas engine and an electric motor with batteries that can be charged in as little as 3.5 hours.

Honda begins leasing an all-electric Fit hatchback this summer on the West and East coasts with a $399 monthly lease, The New York Times reported. The 2013 Accord also will be offered as a plug-in hybrid with a 2-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors. A plug-in hybrid version of Toyota?s Prius v wagon hits showrooms this fall along with the plug-in electric RAV4 EV crossover SUV.

In the upscale market, Infiniti plans to unveil a two-seat sports hybrid at the Geneva auto show in March, Mercedes-Benz is getting into the act with a 526-horsepower, super-electric called the SLS AMG E-Cell and the Times says Porsche is working on a 730-horsepower plug-in 918 Spyder hybrid capable of 198 mph while getting 70 mpg.

That dream sports hybrid will cost more than $800,000.

The king of the plug-ins right now is the 2012 Mitsubishi i ? an egg-shaped $29,125 electric car rated by the U.S. EPA at 126 miles per gallon (equivalent) on the highway and 99 mpg in the city. But that vehicle ? named ?Greenist? by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy ? is rated at just 63 horsepower with a range of 62 miles and top speed of 81 mph.

The Honda Civic Natural Gas tied with the 2012 Nissan Leaf electric for second on the group?s ?Greenist Vehicle? list, followed by the Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, Smart fortwo, Scion iQ, Honda Civic Hybrid, Lexus CT 200h, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Honda CR-Z and the Toyota Yaris.

Other traditional fuel-sippers include the 2012 Volkswagen Golf/Jetta diesel and the near-twin 2012 Hyundai Accent and 2012 Kia Rio, that get an identical 30 mpg city/40 mph highway and 34 mpg in combined driving with a manual transmission.

?We?re in the covered-wagon days of this industry,? senior analyst Michelle Krebs told the Tribune. ?We?re in a pioneer time.?

But recharging a Leaf is roughly equivalent to using a clothes dryer or two hair dryers at the same time ? and electricity is cheaper when you use it overnight.

?One vehicle?s demand can be [the equivalent of the electric load] anywhere up from three quarters of a house up to three houses,? a spokesman for Project Get Ready, an initiative of the Rocky Mountain Institute, told U.S. News & World Report.

Chrysler says ?no thanks? to loan

Chrysler, which once said it needed a federal energy loan to retool for hybrid and electric vehicles, has changed its mind.

Chrysler earlier this month dropped its request for less than $3.5 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy, saying it can come up with competitive, fuel-efficient vehicles without a government loan.

?The Department of Energy?s proposed terms were very restrictive and compliance would have negatively affected our operational flexibility,? the Auburn Hills, Mich., automaker said in a statement.

Chrysler posted a $183 million profit in 2011 ? it?s first year in the black since 2005.

The federal government has awarded $9.1 billion in loans to automakers ? $5.9 billion to Ford, $1.4 billion to Nissan and $529 million to California start-up Fisker Automotive Inc. ? under a $25 billion Energy Department loan program funded during the George W. Bush administration.

In the current study, published online Monday (Feb. 20) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences did not germinate the seeds directly, but took immature fruit tissue and cultured it in a nutrient-rich goop. The cells in this fruit tissue have the ability to transform into all parts of the plant, and they did, growing into seedlings that the researchers then transplanted into regular soil.

Germ?n Ch?vez and Diego V?squez from the Centro de Ornitolog?a y Biodiversidad (CORBIDI) in Peru have discovered a new colorful lizard which they named Potamites montanicola, or "mountain dweller". The new species was found in Cordillera de Vilcabamba and Apurimac river valley, the Cusco Region of Peru at altitude ranging from 1,600 to 2,100 meters. Their study was published in the open access journal ZooKeys.

"The new discovery raises some questions", say the authors. This is the only member of the genus known to live at such altitude. It is yet unknown what biological mechanisms help the lizard to survive in this harsh environment, much colder than what it's relatives in the genus prefer. Scientists also believe the lizard may be nocturnal, which raises the question of how it maintains its body temperature during night time. In a research lab at Wake Forest University, biophysicist and computer scientist Samuel Cho uses graphics processing units (GPUs), the technology that makes videogame images so realistic, to simulate the inner workings of human cells.

"If it wasn't for gamers who kept buying these GPUs, the prices wouldn't have dropped, and we couldn't have used them for science," Cho says.

Now he can see exactly how the cells live, divide and die.

And that, Cho says, opens up possibilities for new targets for tumor-killing drugs.

Cho's most recent computer simulation, of a critical RNA molecule that is a component of the human telomerase enzyme, for the first time shows hidden states in the folding and unfolding of this molecule, giving scientists a far more accurate view of how it functions. The results of his research appear in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Cho worked with colleagues from the University of Maryland and Zhejiang University in China for this study.

The human telomerase enzyme is found only in cancerous cells. It adds tiny molecules called telomeres to the ends of DNA strands when cells divide -- essentially preventing cells from dying.

"The cell keeps reproducing over and over, and that's the very definition of cancer," Cho says. "By knowing how telomerase folds and functions, we provide a new area for researching cancer treatments."

A new drug would stop the human telomerase enzyme from adding onto the DNA, so the tumor cell dies.

Cho, an assistant professor of physics and computer science, has turned his attention to videogaming technology and the bacterial ribosome -- a molecular system 200 times larger than the human telomerase enzyme RNA molecule. His research group has begun to use graphics cards called GPUs to perform these cell simulations, which is much faster than using standard computing.

"We have hijacked this technology to perform simulations very, very quickly on much larger biomolecular systems," Cho says.

Without the GPUs, Cho estimated it would have taken him more than 40 years to program that simulation.

Now, it will take him a few months.

As part of the first national, randomized clinical trial to study two methods of drug delivery for seizing patients, researchers have shown that using an auto-injector, similar to an EpiPen, to deliver anticonvulsant medication stops prolonged seizures more quickly and effectively than drug delivery through an IV line.

The research, which will be published in the Feb. 16 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, was conducted as part of the Rapid Anticonvulsant Medication Prior to Arrival Trial (RAMPART), which included University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers and local paramedics as part of a nationwide effort studying status epilepticus, or prolonged seizure lasting more than five minutes.

Nationwide, RAMPART involved more than 79 hospitals, 33 emergency medical services agencies, more than 4,000 paramedics and 893 patients, ranging in age from several months old to age 103. The study was conducted through the Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials (NETT) network and sponsored by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which formed NETT to link 17 major research hospitals to conduct clinical trials on acute conditions of the brain.

Cincinnati had the second highest participation site in the nation, with 133 patients treated in the study by participating fire/EMS agencies across the region. In Ohio, UC was supported by Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Forest Park and Green Township fire departments and, in Kentucky, by Florence and Independence fire departments. Leading the study in Cincinnati was Arthur Pancioli, MD, professor and Richard C. Levy Chair for Emergency Medicine at UC.

"Prolonged seizures are dangerous, and may be life threatening," says Pancioli. "As with many neurological emergencies, treating status epilepticus as rapidly as possible can significantly improve a patient's outcome. We now know that using midazolam via an autoinjector, which is easier to administer to a seizing patient, is just as good, if not better, than our current practice which requires starting an IV line."

RAMPART focused on two anticonvulsant medications known to be effective in controlling seizures: midazolam, able to be rapidly absorbed from muscle, and lorazepam, the current standard of care, which must be delivered by IV.

Carried out by paramedics, the study sought to compare how well delivery by each method stopped patients' seizures by the time the ambulance arrived at the emergency department. Researchers found that 73 percent of patients receiving midazolam were seizure-free upon arrival at the hospital, compared to 63 percent of patients who received IV treatment with lorazepam.

Patients treated with midazolam were also less likely to require hospitalization than those receiving IV lorazepam. Among those admitted, both groups had similarly low rates of recurrent seizures.

Starting enrollment in 2009 and completing in June 2011, RAMPART was a unique form of clinical trial, eligible under the Food and Drug Administration requirement of "exception from informed consent." The federal regulation was created to protect patients who are involved in research when consent is not possible because of their medical condition. Researchers held community consultation and public awareness events before RAMPART's launch to raise awareness and get feedback from residents.

"This trial is significant, not only for its findings, but also for the research methods involved," says Pancioli. "We would like to thank the dedicated EMS personnel for their work on the trial and also our community for their trust in allowing us to perform this study. Without this type of research, critical opportunities to help patients with neurological emergencies would be lost."

"In our region, many fire departments and EMS agencies have been using midazolam to treat seizures for several years, and this trial affirms the safety and effectiveness that we have seen," says Jason McMullan, MD, RAMPART co-investigator and assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine at UC.

"The use of the auto-injectors could further improve the excellent care our paramedics provide to their patients every day," he says. "While the auto-injectors are not yet commercially availability, this trial provides an opportunity to change the way that paramedics everywhere deliver time critical treatment for status epilepticus and improve the potential outcomes for our patients."
