SANTA ANA, California ? A hit and run driver struck a 13-year-old girl riding a bicycle in a crosswalk on Warner Avenue Monday night leaving her in critical condition, according to a press release issued by the Santa Ana Police Department.
The teenager was riding her bicycle north on Greenville across Warner Avenue when she was struck by the driver of an unknown vehicle traveling westbound on Warner Avenue. The girl was thrown to the ground and sustained severe injuries. The driver made no attempt to stop or assist the injured girl.
Motorists passing the scene of the crash stopped to help the injured girl and called for paramedics to come to the scene. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but remains in critical condition.
Detectives believe there may have been several witnesses to the crime that left the scene prior to officers arriving and are encouraging them to call the Santa Ana Police Traffic Division at (714) 245-8214.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, there were 51,000 pedalcyclist injured in traffic accidents in the United States in 2010. Sadly there were also 618 pedalcyclists who were killed in crashes that year, down 1.6% from the previous year?s deaths.
